How to Stop a Dog From Pulling on the Leash
Why do dogs pull on walks?
Pulling isn't dominance and it isn't stubbornness โ it's simple cause and effect. The sequence that creates a pulling dog:
- Dog surges toward something interesting (squirrel, hydrant, open field).
- The leash goes taut; you follow to keep up or to avoid the choking sounds.
- The dog arrives at the interesting thing. Pulling worked.
- Repeat 6 times a day, 365 days a year โ that's two thousand reinforced reps a year.
Dogs aren't pulling despite you; they're pulling with your cooperation. So the plan has to break the payment system, not fight the dog.
Why don't collars work for pullers?
A collar puts all stopping force on the throat. When a pulling dog hits the end of the leash, the pressure lands on the trachea and neck structures โ which produces the gagging and coughing every owner recognizes. The dog's response isn't "I should slow down"; it's to lean harder against the pressure (opposition reflex). Two consequences:
- It doesn't stop the pulling. The discomfort competes with the reward of arriving somewhere.
- It causes damage. Repeated tracheal pressure is linked to coughing, throat injury, and worsened airway issues โ especially small breeds and flat-faced breeds, where tracheal problems are already common.
Choke chains and prong collars escalate the same flawed mechanism through pain. Major training and veterinary bodies (AVSAB and equivalents) recommend positive-reinforcement alternatives; discomfort-based tools suppress behavior without teaching an alternative and can tip frustration into reactivity.
How does a front-clip harness stop pulling?
Physics, not pain. With the leash clipped to a ring on the chest:
- Dog surges forward โ the pull vector comes from the front of the body โ the dog's shoulders rotate sideways, toward you.
- Forward motion stops dead โ without throat pressure, without pain, without a battle.
- The dog learns the new rule in days: tight leash = going nowhere; slack leash = the walk continues.
The back clip stays for well-behaved walking, jogging, and car restraint (many harnesses accept a seatbelt clip). The front clip is the training tool.
Trainer's note: the harness manages the physics; you still pay the behavior. A slack leash that never gets rewarded will drift back to pulling in high-excitement zones. Treats on walks are training equipment.
The 2-week loose-leash plan
Week 1 โ mechanic changes
- Fit the harness: two fingers under every strap, chest plate below the throat.
- Clip to the FRONT ring. Use a 6-ft flat leash โ no retractables (they keep constant tension, teaching pulling).
- Walk. The instant the leash goes taut: stop, plant your feet, wait silently for slack.
- Slack appears โ praise warmly, treat at your knee-line ("pay the position"), resume walking.
- Practice in low-distraction zones first (quiet street beats dog park).
Week 2 โ sharpen the rule
- Add the cue: say "let's go" as you change direction, reward the dog catching up at your side.
- Use the "turnaround": when the dog forges ahead of your knee-line, turn 180ยฐ and walk the other way calmly. This teaches attention to you, not just speed control.
- Graduate distractions: busier streets, then park edges. Set the dog up to succeed โ don't jump to the hardest environment on day 12.
- Once walking politely, trial the back clip in calm zones; keep the front clip for exciting places.
Which anti-pull tool is right for your dog?
| Tool | Mechanism | Throat pressure | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-clip harness | Redirects pull sideways | None | Best default for pullers |
| Back-clip harness | Comfort only | None | For already-polite dogs |
| Flat collar | Direct pressure | High | ID tags only, not pulling control |
| Head halter | Guides head, controls body | None | Very strong dogs, with intro training |
| Prong / choke | Pain suppression | By design | Avoid โ AVSAB-opposed |
