Why are cats so bad at drinking water?
Everything strange about cat drinking behavior traces to one fact: cats are descended from desert hunters. The African wildcat's body was built to extract moisture from prey and run on minimal water — and three instincts from that world still run in your kitchen:
- A weak thirst drive. A dog's body sends a loud "go drink" signal as soon as it's behind on water. A cat's signal is quiet — even when mildly dehydrated, a cat won't necessarily seek the bowl. Feline medicine treats this as a core reason dry-food-only cats run chronic hydration deficits.
- Moving water = safe water. In nature, still water stagnates and gathers pathogens; moving water is fresher and more oxygenated. Most cats show a clear preference for streams, drips, and fountains over a flat bowl.
- Never drink near the kill. Water next to prey remains is contaminated water. This is why so many cats refuse the bowl sitting next to the food dish — and drink eagerly from a glass on the nightstand, a dripping tap, or the bathtub.

When is not-drinking a vet emergency?
- Sudden increase in drinking or urination — classic early flag for kidney disease, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. Bloodwork catches these early.
